Malnutrition-Related Hospitalizations Rising in Iqaluit
CBC Report
In a January 2026 CBC report, malnutrition-related hospitalizations at Qikiqtani General Hospital in Iqaluit more than doubled between 2022 and 2024. This increase seems to be related to a reduction in community food support programs and experts warn that actual numbers may be even higher. Read full article here.
CIHI Mandates Codes for Malnutrition Diagnoses
Effective April 1, 2026
CMTF has been working with Canadian Institute for Health Information to strengthen data around malnutrition diagnosis in hospitals. As of April 1, 2026, CIHI will be mandating the assignment of a code for a documented diagnosis of malnutrition. Read more details here.

Another Malnutrition Petition in House of Commons
November 25, 2025
MP Guillaume Deschênes-Thériault from Madawaska-Restigouche, New Brunswick, presented a petition for malnutrition in the House of Commons on November 25, 2025. The petition included recommendations from CMTF’s whitepaper: Malnutrition in Canada: Unveiling the Need for Priority and Policy, see video clip here.
Provincial Dietitians Unite for CMTF SGA Train-the-Trainer Pilot Program
On November 25, clinical dietitians from across the province travelled to St. John’s to participate in CMTF's hands-on Subjective Global Assessment (SGA) Train-the-Trainer (TTT) Pilot program.
