Bariatric Nutrition Counseling Best Practices for Primary Care
Mentoring session on 4 June 2025, 12 pm to 1 pm EST
The Canadian Malnutrition Task Force Primary Care Working Group is holding a Community of Practice session to guide primary care, community, and home care dietitians on “Bariatric Nutrition Counseling Best Practices for Primary Care”. Join mentor, Michele MacDonald Werstuck RD MSc CDE, Nutrition Groups Program Coordinator, Hamilton Family Health Team to:
- Become familiar with the pros and cons of bariatric surgery to ensure patients are well informed of expectations pre and post surgery;
- Learn how dietitians and health care providers can work together to help patients be successful and mitigate common post surgical issues such as weight regain, nutritional deficiencies and malnutrition;
- Explore how to manage common challenges such as under-eating, over-reliance on protein shakes, and forgetting to take supplements;
- Engage in breakout sessions to discuss a case study commonly seen in primary care;
- Become aware of supporting tools and resources for dietitians to use in clinical practice to provide evidence-based bariatric care
