Canadian Malnutrition Awareness Week Success

Canadian Malnutrition Awareness Week 2017 @ Hamilton Health Sciences The registered dietitians and dietetic assistants at Hamilton Health Sciences (HHS) are excited to share our success story from this year’s Malnutrition Awareness Week. This is the first year that we have taken part so we decided to embrace the theme of Food is Medicine, Medicine Heals. Our main goal was to raise awareness about malnutrition in our hospitals with staff, patients and families. Our Activities: -Interactive booth in the front lobby with games and nutrition trivia for staff and visitors to partake in. Goodies and prizes were included, thanks to Nestle and Abbott! -Traveling caravans went from ward to ward with info sessions about the issue of malnutrition, the consequences of malnutrition and what the healthcare team can do to detect, prevent and treat malnourished patients. -Utilized HHS social media accounts to promote our message. -Promotional posters were placed on all wards and in common areas. -We wore “Food is Medicine, Medicine Heals” t-shirts and distributed matching pens to further promote our message. -Patient meal tray tickets had the message “Food is Medicine, Medicine Heals” printed on them for the week. -Summary newsletters went to ward educators to distribute to staff who may have missed the information sessions. Results: -Over 600 people visited our booth or attended the info sessions. -A summary of our key messages and activities was featured in the HHS Vice President’s update. -The increased malnutrition awareness from these events led to the creation of an HHS Malnutrition Task force. The objective of this group is to improve the detection, assessment and treatment of malnutrition at HHS.
