JOINT WEBINAR
Date: Thursday, September 25, 2025
Time: 12:00 - 13:15 ET
Hosted by ASPEN, registration details to follow
This webinar is brought to you by ASPEN and the Canadian Malnutrition Task Force as part of Malnutrition Awareness Week™ September 8-12, 2025 "United Against Malnutrition" and Canadian Malnutrition Awareness Week™ October 6 - 10, 2025 "Unveiling Solutions"
This webinar is presented in English / Ce webinaire sera présenté en Anglais.
Webinar description:
As the global obesity epidemic continues to escalate, anti-obesity medications, particularly incretin mimetics, have revolutionized obesity treatment and are now widely used in clinical practice. While these therapies enable substantial and sustained weight loss, emerging evidence highlights unintended consequences such as substantial skeletal muscle loss and increased risk of malnutrition, issues that are often overlooked in weight management settings.
This webinar will review the current literature and offer practical, evidence-based strategies to mitigate muscle loss in the context of these therapies. Three internationally recognized experts will provide a multidisciplinary perspective on pharmacologic treatments, malnutrition, and muscle health. Attendees will gain valuable insights into drug mechanisms, nutritional risks, and the essential role of targeted nutrition and exercise strategies to preserve muscle and optimize outcomes.
Learning Objectives:
By the end of this webinar the audience will be able to:
- Understand the impact of anti-obesity medications on skeletal muscle health
- Differentiate between various pharmacologic treatments and related risk profiles for malnutrition.
- dentify key components of nutritional and physical interventions that support muscle health.
- Utilize practical tips and resources to integrate muscle-preserving strategies into clinical nutrition care.
Speakers:
Carla Prado, PhD, RD, FCAHS, Distinguished University Professor/Canada Research Chair, Director Human Nutrition Research Unit, University of Alberta
Stuart Phillips, PhD, FACSM, FCAHS, Professor and Tier 1 Canada Research Chair; Director, Physical Activity Centre of Excellence (PACE), Department of Kinesiology, McMaster University, Hamilton, ON, Canada
Manpreet Mundi, MD, Professor of Medicine, Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes, Metabolism, and Nutrition, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN

She directs the Human Nutrition Research Unit, recognized as one of the world’s leading research and training facilities for body composition and energy metabolism assessments.
Dr. Prado's research focuses on assessing nutritional status through precise measurements of body composition and energy metabolism. Her current research program investigates the prevalence and health outcomes of abnormal body composition phenotypes in patients with diverse chronic conditions. She is also developing targeted nutrition interventions to optimize body composition and improve health outcomes.
Dr. Prado is an Associate Editor for two of the top journals in her field, serves on several international clinical guideline committees, and is a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences as well as a member of the Royal Society of Canada’s College of New Scholars, Artists, and Scientists.
