Webinar description:
Calcium is an essential nutrient crucial for bone health and various physiological functions. However, the role of calcium supplementation in cardiovascular health has been a topic of ongoing debate and research. Emerging evidence has raised questions about the potential cardiovascular risks associated with calcium supplementation, although it is still debatable, creating a need for update for healthcare professionals and the public. This webinar aims to address these concerns by discussing the latest findings and their implications for clinical practice and public health.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Understand the current research and evidence regarding the effects of calcium supplementation on cardiovascular health
  2. Identify the potential mechanisms linking calcium supplementation to cardiovascular outcomes.
  3. Evaluate the risks and benefits of calcium supplementation for different population subgroups.
    • Identify the risks of avoiding required calcium intake in older populations as a negative consequence of misinterpretation of research results by the public

Moderator: JoAnne Arcand PhD, RD (Ontario Tech University)

About the Speakers:

Hassan Vatanparast, MD, PhD is a Professor at the University of Saskatchewan, specializing in nutrition and public health. His extensive research on calcium intake has underscored its critical role in bone health, chronic disease prevention, and overall well-being. Dr. Vatanparast has focused on improving dietary patterns in diverse and vulnerable populations, significantly contributing to public health strategies that promote optimal nutrition and long-term health outcomes. His team's numerous publications on calcium intake and health outcomes have informed dietary intake guidelines.

Payam Sharifan, MD, PhD is a researcher and postdoctoral fellow at the College of Pharmacy and Nutrition at the University of Saskatchewan (Vatanparast Nutritional Epidemiology Lab).
