This webinar is brought to you by CMTF as part of Canadian Malnutrition Awareness Week™ October 7 - 11, 2024 "ACT - Advocate, Collaborate, Transform"
This webinar is presented in English / Ce webinaire sera présenté en Anglais.
Webinar description:
Malnutrition in hospitalized children is common with recent studies showing up to 1 in 3 patients being malnourished on admission. Malnutrition is associated with adverse outcomes including increased length of stay. Despite this, malnutrition is under-recognized and standardized nutritional risk screening & assessment is underutilized. The Pediatric Integrated Nutrition Pathway for Acute Care (P-INPAC) is an evidence- and consensus-based algorithm developed by the pediatric working group of the Canadian Malnutrition Task Force (CMTF), modelled after INPAC (Integrated Nutrition Pathway for Acute Care) which is the algorithm used and validated for malnutrition care in adult care settings in Canada. P-INPAC aims to prevent, detect, monitor, and treat malnutrition in acute care pediatric patients.
The P-INPAC Pilot Study was launched in 2023 which aims to assess the feasibility of implementing the first 2 steps (screening and assessment) in pediatric wards across 3 children’s hospitals. A 3-phase approach was used to 1) define current nutrition practices; 2) train hospital staff on the P-INPAC Pathway and its components; and 3) audit and evaluate implemented screening and assessment practices.
In this session, the methodology and first results of the study completed at 2 of the 3 sites will be presented by two investigators. Practical lessons learned, perceived barriers, and ways to further improve implementation will be shared along with resources and tools to assist practitioners.
Learning Objectives:
By the end of this webinar the audience will be able to:
- Familiarize themselves with approaches to implement routine screening for malnutrition and performing anthropometric measurements on pediatric wards
- Learn about the first results of the P-INPAC implementation pilot study completed in 2 out of 3 hospitals
- Reflect on how barriers to implementation can be addressed
- Understand how the findings can be applied to their settings
Speakers:
Jessie Hulst MD, PhD, pediatric gastroenterologist, The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto
Jillian Owens, MHM, RD, McMaster Children's Hospital (MCH)
Moderator: Andrea Martinez, MD, FAAP, FRCPC, pediatric gastroenterologist, BC Children’s Hospital
About the Speakers:
Dr. Jessie Hulst is an Associate Professor in the Department of Pediatrics and Nutritional Sciences of the University of Toronto. Previously, she served as a Staff Gastroenterologist at Sophia Children's Hospital in Rotterdam, Netherlands (2011-2018). Her academic achievements include a PhD focused on nutritional assessment in critically ill children (2004), development of a nutritional (risk) screening tool (STRONGkids), and > 95 peer-reviewed publications. She was involved in the implementation of the Dutch Malnutrition Taskforce pediatric malnutrition pathway and mandatory National Hospital Quality Indicators. She is currently the co-chair of the Pediatric working group of the Canadian Malnutrition Task Force. Recently, she was appointed as Distinguished Fellow in Child Nutrition at the Joannah & Brian Lawson Centre for Child Nutrition, University of Toronto, with a mission to enhance physician competency in both clinical and public health nutrition through educational initiatives and resource development.
Jillian Owens works in the inpatient pediatric GI/Surgery unit at McMaster Children's Hospital (MCH). After completing her undergrad in Food and Nutrition at Toronto Metropolitan University and Dietetic Internship at The Hospital for Sick Children, she went on to do a Masters of Health Management at McMaster University in 2019. Jillian has worked in numerous areas at McMaster including pediatric oncology, general pediatrics and outpatient pediatric GI. Her research interests lie in nutrition and IBD as well as pediatric malnutrition in hospitalized patients and she sits on various committees aimed at improving nutrition care for the pediatric population at MCH. She and her healthcare professional team introduced a pediatric malnutrition screening tool to the GI/Surgery ward, and she continues to work to promote awareness of pediatric malnutrition.
About the Moderator:
Dr. Andrea Martinez is a Pediatric Gastroenterologist at BC Children’s Hospital (BCCH), Medical Director of the Complex Feeding and Nutrition Service and Medical lead of the Children’s Intestinal Rehabilitation Program at BCCH and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of British Columbia.
