Speaker:

Kelsey Cochrane, PhD, RD (University of Saskatchewan)

Webinar description:

Dr. Cochrane will share an overview of her PhD research, a randomized clinical trial of folic acid vs 5-methyltetrahydrofolate supplementation during pregnancy, including key findings, how she maximized her time and data, and advice for future students. She will share learnings and tips for success based on her trajectory of working as a Registered Dietitian, the decision to pursue a PhD at the University of British Columbia, and what she is working on now as an Assistant Professor at the University of Saskatchewan.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Explore key results from a randomized clinical trial of folic acid vs 5-MTHF supplementation during pregnancy and lactation
  2. New research questions around optimal perinatal folate supplementation
  3. Upcoming research in perinatal nutrition and infant feeding with Dr. Cochrane at the University of Saskatchewan

Moderator: Crystal Karakochuk, PhD

About the Speaker:

Dr. Kelsey Cochrane is currently an Assistant Professor of Nutrition in the College of Pharmacy and Nutrition at the University of Saskatchewan (USask). She completed her Ph.D. in Human Nutrition at the University of British Columbia in 2023, conducting a clinical trial of folic acid vs 5- MTHF folate supplementation during pregnancy and lactation. Dr. Cochrane’s research program at USask aims to advance nutritional practices and health outcomes for pregnant individuals and their babies. She is interested in how maternal nutrition impacts the nutritional and bioactive components of human milk, how human milk composition influences infant development and health outcomes, and optimizing infant formula composition. Her research also contributes to program development and public policy which improves breastfeeding equity and access to human milk.
