Speaker:

Kelsey Cochrane, PhD, RD (University of Saskatchewan)

Webinar description:

Dr. Cochrane will share her learnings and tips for success based on her trajectory of working as a Registered Dietitian in Saskatchewan, the decision to pursue a PhD at the University of British Columbia, and then returning to the University of Saskatchewan as an Assistant Professor. She will share an inside look into her PhD research, how she maximized her time and the data from her clinical pilot trial, and advice for future students. Finally, Dr. Cochrane will share how she bridged her PhD into an academic position as USask and what she is working on now.

Learning Objectives:

1. Transitioning from being a clinician to academia, and bridging these skills to maximize research impact
2. Utilizing pilot data to build a successful CIHR grant proposal
3. Learning about research opportunities in perinatal nutrition and infant feeding with Dr. Cochrane at the University of Saskatchewan

Moderator: Crystal Karakochuk, PhD

About the Speaker:

Dr. Kelsey Cochrane is currently an Assistant Professor of Nutrition in the College of Pharmacy and Nutrition at the University of Saskatchewan (USask). She completed her Ph.D. in Human Nutrition at the University of British Columbia in 2023, conducting a clinical trial of folic acid vs 5- MTHF folate supplementation during pregnancy and lactation. Dr. Cochrane’s research program at USask aims to advance nutritional practices and health outcomes for pregnant individuals and their babies. She is interested in how maternal nutrition impacts the nutritional and bioactive components of human milk, how human milk composition influences infant development and health outcomes, and optimizing infant formula composition. Her research also contributes to program development and public policy which improves breastfeeding equity and access to human milk.
