Speaker: Kelly Picard, PhD, RD, CDE (University of British Columbia)

Webinar description:

Do your eyes glaze over when you reach the methods section of a paper? Or do you skip the methods section altogether? As clinicians working in nutrition, methods sections can read like they are written in a different language. But the methods used to assess dietary intake, including for the collection and analysis of dietary intake data, can have a big impact on the results and how we should interpret them! In this session, we will explore dietary assessment methods commonly used in research. We will discuss how the strengths and limitations of different methods relates to their suitability for addressing different types of research questions, how the use of different methods can contribute to conflicting findings across studies, and key considerations in interpreting study findings and their applicability to clinical practice based on the dietary assessment methods applied.

Learning Objectives:

1) Describe dietary assessment methods commonly used in research and how they compare to methods used in clinical practice.

2) Explore how differences in dietary assessment methods used in different studies can contribute to differences in research findings.

3) Identify strengths and limitations of different dietary assessment methods and the implications for interpreting study findings and their relevance to clinical practice.

Moderator: Claire Tugault-Lafleur, PhD, RD
