This webinar will cover the nutrition-specific bias unique to nutrition studies and the development and evolution of the NUQUEST (NUtrition QUality Evaluation Strengthening Tools) checklists, guidance and worksheets for assessing risk of bias in nutrition studies (randomized controlled trials, cohort studies and case-control studies). It will set the foundation for what will be covered in an upcoming three-part NUQUEST virtual workshop series to be hosted by CNS in 2022.

NUQUEST Description:
Dietary exposure assessments are a critical issue in evaluating human nutrition studies; however, existing bias assessment tools do not consistently include nutrition-specific criteria. Here we report on the development of the Nutrition QUality Evaluation Strengthening Tools (NUQUEST) for randomized controlled trials, cohort studies and case-control studies. NUQUEST integrates nutrition-specific criteria with generic criteria from existing tools with demonstrated reliability and validity. Tools were developed using a comprehensive, stepped approach and evaluations using a sample of nutrition studies produced high interrater reliability and concurrent validity and a user-friendly approach. Detailed guidance is presented to support users and the accompanying worksheet provides an optional framework to guide users through their ratings. NUQUEST represents a consistent and transparent approach for evaluating risk of bias issues related to dietary exposure assessment commonly encountered in human nutrition studies.

Learning Objectives:

At the end of the webinar, participants will be able to:

  1. Understand broadly the key risk of bias issues in nutrition studies;
  2. Know the key features of the NUQUEST checklists;
  3. Understand when and how to apply the NUQUEST checklists.

Speakers:
Shannon Kelly, MSc, PhD (c) - School of Epidemiology and Public Health, University of Ottawa
Amanda MacFarlane, PhD – Director, Agriculture, Food and Nutrition Evidence Center, Texas A&M Agrilife Research

Co-Moderators:
George Wells, PhD - School of Epidemiology and Public Health, University of Ottawa; Director, Cardiovascular Research Methods Centre, University of Ottawa Heart Institute
Karima Benkhedda, PhD – Senior Scientific Evaluator, Bureau of Nutritional Sciences, Health Canada

Presentation will be made in English; questions can be submitted/addressed in both English and French.

Members of the NUQUEST working group will participate in the Q&A period.

About the Speakers:

Shannon Kelly, MSc, PhD (c) - is a senior research methodologist and manager in Cardiovascular Research Methods Centre at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute where her team conducts evidence syntheses to inform health care practice and policy. Shannon’s primary research interests focus on advancing the science of evidence synthesis, research design and methodology. She completed her MSc. (Epidemiology) at the University of Ottawa and her research concentrated on approaches for expediting evidence synthesis. Shannon is currently a Ph.D. candidate in the School of Epidemiology and Public Health at the University of Ottawa where her dissertation research involves developing nutrition-specific risk of bias tools. She is a core member of the NUQUEST Working Group. She has been actively involved with the CIHR Drug Safety and Effectiveness Network since 2011. In this capacity, she has worked with a number of organizations nationally and internationally, including the Canadian Agency for Drugs and Technologies in Health, the Public Health Agency of Canada, the Ontario Drug Policy Research Network, the World Health Organization, the Cardiac Arrhythmia Network of Canada (CANet) and the Cochrane Collaboration.

Amanda MacFarlane, PhD - is the founding director of the Agriculture, Food, and Nutrition Scientific Evidence Center at Texas A&M University and a core member of the NUQUEST Working Group. She received her B.Sc. in Biology and Biotechnology from Carleton University, her Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Ottawa and her post-doctoral training in the Division of Nutritional Sciences at Cornell University. She was a Research Scientist and Head of the Micronutrient Research Section at Health Canada from 2008-2022. Her research examines the impact of B vitamin nutrition on health and disease. She is involved in policy and regulatory work related to food fortification, food labelling and vitamin supplement content and use. She was the Chair of the Canada-US Joint Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs) Working Group (2013-2022) during which time chronic disease endpoints were incorporated into the DRIs framework, sodium and potassium DRIs were reviewed, and a review of the macronutrients was initiated. She is the Member-at-large for Food and Nutrition Policy of the Board of Directors of the American Society of Nutrition and an Associate Editor for the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
