Description:
In the field of pediatrics, the role of a champion of malnutrition care is shared by many disciplines. In this dynamic session, the presenters will discuss the unique aspects of multidisciplinary care in the management of malnourished children. Through a series of practical cases, they will highlight the many faces of pediatric malnutrition, and share their experiences on how to collectively support the nutritional rehabilitation of this vulnerable population.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of this webinar, attendees will be able to:

  1. Follow a standardized approach to the identification of malnutrition in pediatrics
  2. Reflect on the key principles of nutrition management in the malnourished child
  3. Discuss opportunities and challenges of multidisciplinary care in pediatric malnutrition

Speaker Bios:

Nikhil Pai MD CNSC FAAP FRCPC, is an Associate Professor in the Division of Pediatric Gastroenterology at McMaster Children’s Hospital. He completed his medical training at McMaster University, residency at the Hospital for Sick Children (University of Toronto), and pediatric gastroenterology fellowship at Boston Children's Hospital (Harvard Medical School). He is Medical Lead of the Complex Pediatric Nutrition Service at McMaster Children's Hospital and Intestinal Failure program. Dr. Pai's research program focuses on the role of the intestinal microbiome in pediatric inflammatory bowel disease, particularly through the application of fecal microbiota transplantation. His research expertise is in multicentre randomized-controlled trials, and basic science studies of host-microbial interactions. Dr. Pai is also an active clinician-educator within the Department of Pediatrics and has a busy inpatient, outpatient and endoscopy practice. He is co-Chair of McMaster Children's Hospital's Pediatric Nutrition Advisory Commmittee and is deeply committed to improving nutrition care across the hospital and surrounding region. 


Jillian Owens, MHM, RD - works in the inpatient pediatric GI/Surgery unit at McMaster Children’s Hospital (MCH). After completing her undergrad in Food and Nutrition at Ryerson University and Dietetic Internship at The Hospital for Sick Children, she went on to do a Masters of Health Management at McMaster University in 2019. Jillian has worked in numerous areas at McMaster Children’s Hospital including, pediatric oncology, general pediatrics and outpatient pediatric GI. Her research interests lie in nutrition and IBD as well as pediatric malnutrition in hospitalized patients and she sits on various committees aimed at improving nutrition care for the pediatric population at MCH. She and her healthcare professional team introduced a pediatric malnutrition screening tool to the GI/Surgery ward and she continues to work to promote awareness of pediatric malnutrition.
