Indirect calorimetry (IC) offers precise measurement of energy expenditure, andhas been widely used in critically ill patients to guide caloric intake and help maintain critical lean body mass. Predictive equations do not accurately predict required energy needs compared to IC. This webinar will provide valuable information on the use of indirect calorimetry for critically ill patients and other outpatient populations.

1- Fundamentals of indirect calorimetry testing

2- Benefit of using indirect calorimetry for nutritional management in ICU

3- Potential benefit and use of indirect calorimetry in different outpatient settings


About the Speakers:

Dr. Maria Ines Pinto-Sanchez obtained her MD certification in 2002, and completed her Gastroenterology training in 2008 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. She joined the Farncombe Institute at McMaster in 2010 as clinical research fellow and obtained Master in Science degree in 2014. She completed a Clinical Gastroenterology and Nutrition fellow  in 2017 in the Division of Gastroenterology at McMaster University and has obtained Clinician Nutrition Specialist Certification from the National Board of Nutrition Support Certification (NBNSC).

Dr. Pinto-Sanchez is currently an active medical staff at the Gastroenterology Division at McMaster University and Hamilton Health Sciences where she provides consultation services in the area of gastroenterology and Nutrition. She is the director of the Celiac Clinic at McMaster University. Her clinical and research interest include the diagnosis and treatment of different gastrointestinal conditions with focus on celiac disease and gluten related disorders. She has received different awards and has over 50 publications, most in high impact journals.
