This webinar will feature a state of the art update on the role of dietary therapies and over-arching nutrition principles in the management of Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and cirrhosis. The unique challenges of Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) cirrhosis that include the presence of sarcopenic obesity, and its' impact on clinical outcomes will be detailed, and integrated into a broader discussion on the nutrition management in cirrhosis.

Learning outcomes:

1. Discuss an evidence based approach to the dietary management of NAFLD.

2. Discuss the emerging role of the microbiome in the context of NAFLD pathophysiology and, to understand mechanisms through which nutrition therapies may be beneficial.

3. Discuss unique nutrition concerns in the setting of NASH cirrhosis.

4. Discuss an approach to nutrition assessment and management in cirrhosis.

 
About the Speakers:

Dr. Maitreyi Raman is a Gastroenterologist and Physician Nutrition Specialist. She completed Medical School at the University of Ottawa, and Internal Medicine/Gastroenterology at Dalhousie University. She then did an advanced fellowship in Clinical Nutrition at the University of Toronto, and a MSc at the University of Calgary. Presently, she is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Calgary. In addition Dr. Raman is the Medical Director for Nutrition Services, Director for AsCEND (Alberta's Centre of excellence for nutrition in Digestive Diseases) and Director for the Clinical Investigator Program at the University of Calgary. Dr. Raman's research program includes the investigation of dietary therapies and nutrients in the treatment of IBD, the effect of dietary components on the microbiome and metabolome, and the effects of nutrition therapies in NAFLD and cirrhosis on clinical outcomes.

Dr. Puneeta Tandon is an Associate Professor of Medicine, Co-Director of the Cirrhosis Care Clinic and Transplant Hepatologist at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Her clinical practice and research are focused on cirrhosis with research interests including cirrhosis related complications, malnutrition, frailty, exercise therapy, palliative care and integrative health approaches such as meditation. It is her career goal to provide wholistic, interdisciplinary, evidence based, patient-centered care through education, empowerment, engagement and team-work.
